If you’ve ever heard me present or have one of my CD’s on organizing or time management you’ve heard me say that many people become disorganized due to life’s situations, such as someone becoming ill, people moving in or out or being on travel. Well this past two weeks I’ve had two out of three happen; hubbie was hospitalized for almost a week and home on disability and now my daughter and three children started moving in yesterday. Talk about chaos and change!

I think I’m handling it all pretty well. The medical supplies – a lot! Two big boxes of gauzes, tape, wrap, saline, IV stand and even antibiotic bags in the frig. (had to make a space for those). This will be our life for at least the next 6 weeks. I created a little “nook” in the dressing room for the boxes and in the bathroom I have a bin holding the items I need daily to cleanse and dress my hubbie’s big toe. You see he has a diabetic ulcer and we are aggressively working at saving his toe (ouch…don’t want to lose the toe!) through IV antibiotics so he has two tubes inserted into his chest, one for the antibiotics and one to draw blood. This is prone to infection so we need to keep a close watch on it!

Now in walks my beautiful daughter whom has finally decided to dissolve her marriage and needs a place to live and my three beautiful grandchildren (11, 9 and 4). So we’ve cleared out my teaching and healing rooms (use to be the rec room in the basement) and we started setting up “house” last night. We decided we could only fit one bed, two dressers, armoire, couch, TV and a shoe rack in this area. I also had screens to create privacy when needed.

The toy box has made its way into my living room and we have another box trunk we want the kids to put their shoes and book bags into. We just don’t know where to locate this at this moment. The house is filling up! She also has a water cooler jug thingy and we’ll put that by the recycling center in the kitchen later today.

Then the outdoor stuff starts to come over: bikes, scooters, picnic table, grill, fire pit, gym set and sand box. Much of my stuff from the rooms has made its way into my office…I can barely walk around in here; however later today I’ll get all that rearranged and give everything a new home. It will be a little tight yet livable.

Oh and I almost forgot the two parrots and a kitten are also coming to stay…our dog Brunno will love this! When you life gets turned upside down, pour a glass of wine and toast to a new life and new beginnings – that’s all we can do. And look at the good…..

I now have two to three assistant cooks and cleaners! And this weekend I’ll be teaching the two oldest grandchildren how to do some of my “simple” computer work. Click here, click there! I have company on my walks with Brunno and Brunno has a lot more “lovings and scratches”. I have more hugs and kisses in the morning and evening!

We are blessed! We are alive! And those piles, bags and boxes will get dealt with over time and life will never be right side up until we all settle in, adjust our chore board and learn to live with all the new until the next “roller coaster” ride comes to town!

I grew up in the forties with practical parents — a
Mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after
she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original
Recycle Queen, before they had a name for it…

A Father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than
buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their
best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them
now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in
a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, dishtowel in the
other.

It was the time for fixing things — a curtain rod,
the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in
a dress. Things we keep.

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All
that re-fixing, re-heating, re-newing, I wanted just once
to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things
away meant there’d always be more.

But then my Mother died, and on that clear summer’s night,
in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the
pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any ‘more.’

Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and
goes away …never to return. So…while we have it…it’s
best we love it…and care for it…and fix it when it’s
broken…and heal it when it’s sick.

This is true…for marriage…and old cars…and children
with bad report cards…and dogs with bad hips…and aging
parents …and grandparents.

We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth
it.

Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away –
or — a classmate we grew up with.

There are just some things that make life important, like
people we know who are special…and so, we keep them close!

Cooking With the Sun!

By Overhall · Comments (0)

In my last post, What Can You Give Up For a Day, I vowed to cook at least 2 meals a week, if not more, using the power of the sun.

My first meal was fish. I did learn for my taste that I “breaded” the fish too much so I need to flash deep fry it after baking in the sun; however before I flash fried the fish was white, tender and flaky. Beautiful!

My next meal was a recipe from the book, “Cooking With Sunshine” by Lorraine Anderson and Rick Palkovic, Margarita Chicken. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in awhile!

Today I’ll be making a recipe, from the above mentioned book, Chiles Rellenos Casserole. I’m very anxious to see how this tastes as I currently make a recipe similar to this; however it is all fried instead of baked.

Why cook with the sun?

My house stays cooler by not baking. I have less to clean up because most of the meal is in one pan. So we save money.

It’s kinder to the environment. It saves time and it’s healthful and delicious. Solar cooking is similar to crock pot cooking. except you don’t lose vitamins and other nutrients.
